Hickory Grove Cemetery in Silerton celebrated its Decoration Day this past Sunday, May 17. This is especially notable knowing that the Methodist church that oversaw the cemetery sadly closed down many years ago. As usual, there was a lot of catching up and fellowship with friends and relatives. There was, of course, the always looked forward to variety of delicious homemade dishes. Of note was Frances Stack’s exquisite epitome of a carrot cake, a carrot cake all other carrot cakes can only hope to become. Much appreciation to all those who worked to make this possible.
It is the time of many graduations. Here are but just a few to celebrate. Silerton Baptist Church acknowledged that Brooklyn Ann Howell, daughter of Jason and Jennifer Howell, graduated from eighth grade from Toone. Makenzi Vasquez, daughter of Rachel and Logan Vann and Ethan Vasquez, graduated from Chester County High School. Makenzi will be pursuing a nursing career at Jackson State. Both graduates were presented Bibles by Pastor Crouthers.
Mary Lynn Lambert attended the graduation of granddaughter Merry Ashlyn Gatewood Guyette from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphrey School of Law on Sunday, May 17. Merry Ashlyn received several high recognitions during her studies. She plans to study for the bar exam this summer and then begin her law career. Upon passing the bar exam, Merry Ashlyn will be appointed Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Jon A. York, Magistrate Judge, United States District Court for the Western Tennessee (Jackson), as well as Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Brian C. Lea, District Judge, United States District Court for the Western Tennessee (Memphis). Also attending the graduation from Hardeman County were paternal grandmother Billie Gatewood and paternal grandparents Jerry and Linda Gatewood and their daughter Brianna. Afterwards, they enjoyed a festive meal at Harbor House restaurant.
Prayers please for Joe Seavers and Wanda Fry, who are having medical issues.
On the goat front: False alarm! It was feared that our Silerton goats got loose and were wildly roaming our streets last week. Not so. It was the goats of another hapless goat farmer further down the road away from Silerton. Calmness has returned; our dogs are back to being bored, and our women and children can now safely traverse our fair streets.
