To dispel all doubt Bonham, Texas, (county seat of Fannin County) was not named after the late drummer of Led Zeppelin. Bonham was named after James Butler Bonham (Feb. 20, 1807 – March 6, 1836) of South Carolina, a 19th-century American soldier who died at the Battle of the Alamo. He bravely volunteered to fight for the Texas Revolution, declining any and all payment in return. After impressing Sam Houston, he was quickly promoted to captain, and legend has it that he died while manning a cannon in the Alamo.
