The Chester County Board of Education met Tuesday, April 21, in the Chester County Board of Education board room. All members of the board were in attendance.
Governor Bill Lee recently made a visit to Chester County Schools as part of his state tour in preparation for the celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. He was personally encouraged to go and see the Chester County schools by higher-ups, a great compliment to our school system. He specifically visited with the vocational programs at Chester County High School and was very complimentary of these programs.
A senior from the Class of 2026, came to the Board to present for Project Graduation. Their goal is to prevent life-ending accidents as a result of graduation celebrations. They offer a 100% drug and alcohol free celebration for the graduating class. They asked the board for their support of this effort in the form of a donation. The Board graciously donated $2,000 in support of this project.
Dr. Stephen Maurice presented to the Board on behalf of the district improvement plan. There are three sections to this plan. The first is an attempt to focus on the needs of every student. Second, is to invest in the people who staff these schools with a focus on the pursuit of adult learning. The third is the strengthening of partnerships with stakeholders in the school system, with opportunities for family engagement. Specific focus is being given to strengthening ELA skills across all grades, algebra readiness, and consistent instruction. The group is focusing on what works rather than adding new initiatives to this program. By 2029, they hope to see measurable growth as a result of this project throughout the district.
A recommendation to approve the Tennessee School Board Association policy revisions was discussed and approved. These revisions had been vetted by both the TSBA and by Superintendent Kizer.
There was also a recommendation to adopt the current textbook selections for the next school year. Local teachers were consulted in picking these books. These textbooks were approved by the Board.
In discussion of “Out-of-County” tuition rates for the next school year, the recommendation was approved to keep this tuition rate the same.
The next meeting of the Chester County Board of Education will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Jacks Creek Elementary.
