Hello to my family and friends. This is a beautiful day! Why? Because it is the day the Lord has made. Thank you, Lord, for all the rain and the sunny weather. You know exactly what we need. I am so sorry that I did not have my column last week. I had so much going on!
Can you believe the month of February is on its way out? It is the last week of February. YEA! That means Spring is around the corner. I hope that all of you had a wonderful week and you took some time to spend with your family. My grandmother Zelma Bass always said, “A family that prays to together, stays together.” You can also add, “If a family plays together, they will have fun together.” That is something that some families do not do!
On Feb. 21, I did not get to attend one of the best programs at the Senior Citizen building because I was out of town. I know it was a wonderful Black History program sponsored by the Ladies of Henderson – Ms. Croom, Ms. Hollingsworth and Ms. Wright. Theme for this year was “Healthy Lifestyle.” They had retired nurse Mrs. Judy Williams and retired Pharmacist Mrs. Corlis Spencer Green as the guest speakers. The MC was comedian Mr. Joshus Emery. I know those who did attend enjoyed the program and learned a lot about a healthy lifestyle. They also had a special performance by the Unique Line Dancer; some of you may have learned some new steps. Great job, ladies; keep up the great work!
Last week was a sad week for me and so many families that I know, and you may know some of them as well. Remember the families of Mr. Jimmy Record, Mrs. Gladys Armstrong, Mr. Vennie A. Reeves, Mrs. Phyllis Ann, Mrs. Sharla Blevins Franklin, who worked for Southwest Human Resource Agency Head Start here in Henderson, and Mrs. Glorious Damron, who worked for the Foster Grandparents program of SWHRA. I knew and loved all of them! Condolences go to all the families and friends of these loved ones from the city of Henderson. The Lord has called them home; yes, we will miss them, but we will never forget them! We have great memories of their smiles, hugs and conversations. Our prayers are with you!
BLACK HISTORY SPOTLIGHT - The month of February has come to an end. We celebrated Black History this month. The first celebration of Black History Month took place at Kent State in February 1970. In 1976, as part of the United States Bicentennial, the informal expansion of Negro History Week to Black History Month was officially recognized by the U.S. government. President Gerald Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Black History does not stop here. History is every day! We just have to remember and acknowledge it.
The City is sending out Happy Birthday Blessings to Cooper Arnold on Feb. 25 and Debbie Currie on Feb. 27. We pray the Lord will keep you healthy and well for many more years.
On the prayer list this week: The bereaved families, our children, teachers and families, the incarcerated, our men and women who are serving our country and, last but not least, the President of the United States and everyone that is leading our country!
Thought for today comes from Lamentations 3:22-23 – “22 It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness!”
