Flener nets two to lead Lions to victory

Posted

Despite falling behind early, the Freed-Hardeman University Lions stormed back to defeat the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics 4-3 on Tuesday.
It was a stolen pass in the 17th minute that saw FHU (2-0-0) fall behind when the Eutectics opened the scoring. The Lions would continue to trail until 29:28 when a short corner kick found Tyler Burns who then passed to Avery Flener in the goal area to boot in the equalizer. Near the end of the first half, Hugo Luque stole the ball away at midfield before passing to Tyler Burns who scored the easy go-ahead goal in the 44th minute.
In the second half the Eutectics (0-2-0) were stunned when the first shot of the half came from the boot of Paolo Sparks who took pass from David Kangni to shoot from long range with enough men in front of the net to screen the keeper and put the Lions up 3-1. Thabo Mahlaha would team up with Flener to volley an arcing pass to Flener who scored his second goal of the match at 57:36 with his left boot to wrap the scoring on the 4-2 victory.
Of Avery Flener’s four shots, three were on target and two were goals. Tyler Burns, David Kanagni, Paolo Sparks, and Martin Theissen each had two shots on goal. In the net, Eduardo Almansa got the win on four saves - including a penalty shot save at 69:03.
The Lions will play in their third away match in a third state to start the season - this time visiting Brescia (Ky.) University on August 27 with a 3 p.m. kickoff.
