Hello from Enville! Well, I wrote last week about the weather predictions. They were right! The snow and freezing rain came in with full force. The ice on the trees is beautiful with the sunshine on it, but I am sure ready for it to go on its merry way! There are lots of downed trees and power lines all over the Pickwick Electric service area. As I write this, we are out of power and water. We have been since the early hours of Sunday morning and do not know how long until we are restored. We have a generator going, so we are blessed. So many do not have this, and they have no heat. I pray they will find a warming station. There are lots of school closings for the rest of the week, and many businesses are closed, too. The Pickwick linemen, along with other area volunteers, are working tirelessly to clean up and get everyone’s power on soon. We appreciate all of them!
Speaking of weather, Groundhog Day is Monday, Feb. 2. Groundhog Day is a tradition in the United States and Canada where a groundhog emerges from his burrow to predict the weather. I truly hope it’s cloudy on this day because if he sees his shadow he is scared back into his burrow, forecasting six more weeks of winter. In the past 10 years, Punxsutawney Phil has been right about 40% of the time. No shadow means an early spring. The first official celebration was in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in 1887.
The Enville Volunteer Fire Department had their annual supper on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Maggie’s in Enville. Fire Chief Thomas Gilham gave some important statistics for the past year. We had a delicious dinner with hors d’oeuvres, salad, our main dishes and several desserts to choose from. We had great service and awesome food and fellowship. We sure do appreciate our firefighters! If you are looking for a place to have a party or just enjoy great food, Maggie’s is your place!
Happy birthday wishes go to Zander Spain on Jan. 31, Robert Conder on Feb. 1, Tiffany Jones on Feb. 3 and Teddy Hollin on Feb. 4. Happy anniversary to Rick and Julie Ooley on Feb. 5. We hope you all enjoy your special day!
