Chester County controlled Friday night’s game from the opening quarter, rolling to a 35-0 victory over South Gibson at Eagle Stadium.
The win moved the Eagles to 3-0 and gave them a measure of revenge after falling to South Gibson 45-10 last season.
Sophomore quarterback Grayson Stewart opened the scoring with a keeper near the goal line. The extra point was missed, leaving Chester County ahead 6-0.
Jay Brown added the Eagles’ second touchdown on a six-yard run, and Brayden Harrison’s extra point made it 13-0. Just before halftime, Stewart rolled to his right and found Jordan Hunt near the pylon for a touchdown. Harrison added the extra point to send Chester County into the locker room with a 20-0 lead.
The Eagles continued to pull away in the third quarter. Stewart kept the ball for another short touchdown run, and Harrison’s kick stretched the lead to 27-0.
Chester County’s defense kept South Gibson off balance throughout the night and provided another scoring opportunity when Chyance Burton intercepted a pass that had been tipped by the intended receiver.
Stewart took advantage, breaking free around the left side for a long touchdown run. Isaiah Armstrong powered into the end zone for the two-point conversion, giving the Eagles their final margin with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter.
Stewart accounted for four touchdowns—three on the ground and one through the air—while the Chester County defense completed the shutout.
After the game, head coach Dewond Johnson said he was pleased with the way his players worked together.
“I’m starting to see them bring a lot more ‘us’ into the building instead of ‘self,’” Johnson said. “That’s the making of a good team.”
Johnson said he felt the Eagles were in control from the beginning but added that there are still small things to improve.
His message as Chester County moves forward with an unbeaten record was simple: “Don’t become complacent. There is still a lot of football to be played.”
The Eagles will travel to Hardin County on Friday.
