The Chester County Eagles walked into McNairy Central on Thursday night as the No. 6 seed with nothing to lose and everything to prove against the No. 3 seed Hardin County. For a half, they more than held their own.
Chester County came out sharp, jumping ahead 4-0 before Hardin County answered with 11 straight points, fueled by a couple of early three-pointers. The Tigers finished the first quarter in front, 11-4.
Jaden Weaver opened the second quarter with a three from the corner, and after Hardin County answered with a dunk on the other end, Chester County settled in. Elam Murphy and Weaver scored on back-to-back drives, cutting the deficit to one. Jaden Williams delivered a big block, and moments later, he found Murphy cutting to the basket to trim the score to 15-14.
Williams attacked the rim aggressively down the stretch of the half, getting to the line multiple times. He knocked down key free throws to give Chester County a 17-15 lead, and Weaver added another bucket to stretch it to 19-15. Hardin County closed the half with a free throw and a three-pointer with 40 seconds left, sending the teams into the locker room tied at 19-19.
The third quarter, though, proved to be the turning point.
A Chester County turnover led to a Hardin County three-pointer to open the half, and another Eagle turnover resulted in a traditional three-point play. In a matter of minutes, the Tigers had stretched the lead to 29-19. Hardin County’s quick hands and transition offense began to take over, converting missed shots and turnovers into points on the other end.
Williams battled inside for a pair under the rim, and Murphy added a strong drive late in the quarter. Williams also completed a three-point play with just over a minute remaining in the third to keep the Eagles within striking distance at 38-26. But Hardin County answered again, including a tip-in at the buzzer to take a 42-28 lead into the fourth.
Hardin County hit six three-pointers on the night, several of them coming at critical moments.
In the final quarter, the Tigers continued to push the pace. Weaver connected on another three to keep fighting, and Chester County kept attacking the rim, but Hardin County answered nearly every time down the floor. The Tigers steadily extended their lead and closed out a 56-38 victory.
Weaver and Williams led the Eagles with 12 points each, with Weaver knocking down two 3-pointers. Murphy added 6points, and the Eagles showed grit throughout, particularly in a strong second quarter that had them tied at halftime.
While the season came to an end Thursday night, the effort and fight on display in the first half showed exactly what this group was capable of when locked in.
