County battles USJ in scrimmage, eyes improvement

Posted

Chester County took the field against USJ Friday night in a competitive preseason scrimmage that showed flashes of promise on both sides of the ball, while also revealing key areas for refinement as the regular season approaches.
Head Coach Dewond Johnson summed it up clearly:
“I thought we came out and played hard and got some things done. We have to clean our offense up and not have drive killers. Defensively, we’ve got to tackle better and get off the field on third down.”
The defense made several standout plays, including a 95-yard pick-six by Chyance Burton and physical stops by Luke Wilson, Jaden Weaver, and Jay Brown. However, missed tackles in open space and breakdowns in deep coverage contributed to multiple USJ touchdowns.
Offensively, Chester County found success on the ground with solid gains from Jayden Williams, Heath Stewart, and Gavin Moody. Still, momentum was often disrupted by dropped passes, negative snaps, and sacks that pushed the team into long-yardage situations. A red-zone interception and back-to-back sacks on one possession served as prime examples of the “drive killers” Coach Johnson referenced.
Despite the ups and downs, the team showed toughness and potential. With improved tackling and sharper execution, Chester County looks to take a step forward heading into their jamboree matchup on August 15.
