The Chester County Junior High varsity softball teams showcased their talent and depth this past weekend during tournament action.
The 8th grade varsity team came out firing Friday night with a dominant 10–0 win over Adamsville. The Eagles struck early when Natalie Hurst tripled to drive in two runs, and Mykayla Stoots followed with an RBI groundout. Tayte Whitman added another run in the second inning with a single, and Makenah Carnell doubled in the third to make it 5–0.
The Eagles put the game away in the fourth with a five-run rally. Hits from Stella Pickens, Hurst, Kenleigh Patterson, Stoots, and Carnell sealed the victory. Hurst not only sparked the offense but also controlled the game in the circle, tossing a no-hitter with seven strikeouts in four innings. Whitman led the lineup with three hits in three at bats, while Hurst and Carnell each drove in multiple runs.
On Saturday, the Eagles battled hard but were eliminated after falling to Dresden. Despite the loss, the team showed grit and growth throughout the tournament.
Head Coach Wes Murphy praised his players:
“Our 8th grade team was dominant in pool play and did not allow a single run. We ended up getting eliminated by Dresden, though. Top hitters were Tayte Whitman and Natalie Hurst. Natalie also had seven strikeouts while pitching.”
Murphy also noted the efforts of the younger group, who played up in the varsity bracket:
“Our 6th/7th grade team played up to be in the varsity tournament, too, and certainly held their own with the older teams. They were eliminated by the eventual champion. Eppie Rowsey and Erby Anne Murphy had the most RBIs, and Lizzie Patterson struck out eight batters while pitching.”
The weekend served as a strong statement for Chester County softball’s future. Both the 8th grade squad and the younger junior varsity group gained valuable experience, with several standout performances that signal a promising season ahead.
