Board spotlights school celebrations

The Chester County Board of Education met Thursday, Dec. 1, 2023, in regular session, with all members in attendance.
The board unanimously approved the 2024-2025 school calendar, portrait of an eagle and changes to policies 4.605 (identifies specific students as gifted/hardship), 6.28 (changes wording concerning high school course requirements for all students except gifted/hardship students) and 3.402 (responsibility for traffic violations while driving school vehicles).
In the spotlight/celebration portion of the meeting, the board heard from Paden Buckley and Dr. Kim Scott about East Chester Elementary School’s recent naming as one of two ESEA distinguished schools. Additionally, Superintendent Troy Kilzer II shared Chester County High School scored above the state and federal graduation rate averages. Chester County scored 97.6 at the state level and third in the state for the southwest core area compared with the state average of 90.6, and Chester County scored 95.1 at federal level, compared with the federal level state average of 86.5.
In other news, Wilma Howard addressed the board, requesting the board consider adding lighting to the outdoor basketball court for local youth who play there after hours.
The next school board meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 18, at Chester County Middle School.
