Posted

The Chester County America 250 Birthday Celebration Committee and American Legion Davidson-Haltom Post 157 will co-host a flag retirement ceremony on Flag Day, Sunday evening, June 14th, beginning at 6 PM at the north end of Gene Record Memorial Park off 600 N. Church Avenue in Henderson, TN.
The public is invited to bring their unserviceable US flags to be retired.
The somber ceremony will include the dignified destruction by burning of worn or retired flags no longer fit for display in accordance with the accepted protocols as set forth in the United States Flag Code. These flags had been placed over the past few months in the Flag Disposal Box at the Chester County Recycling Center on Talley Store Road in Henderson.
The Henderson Fire Department will also participate in the observance.
Local singing sensation Lakelin Lemmings will sing the National Anthem.
Our own 26th District TN state senator Dr. Page Walley will provide the Keynote Address.
Free flags will be given to the first 100 attendees.
June 14th commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The Flag Resolution, passed on June 14, 1777, stated: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
The United States Army also celebrates the U.S. Army birthday on this date as Congress established “the American continental army” on June 14, 1775.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14th as Flag Day; an Act of Congress established National Flag Day on August 3, 1949. The week of June 14th is designated as “National Flag Week”.
